Donor Advised Funds

What is a donor-advised fund?

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving vehicle that is a tax-smart and simple solution for charitable giving to our organization.

Donor-advised funds can accept deposits from a wide variety of assets, including cash, publicly traded stocks and bonds, private equities, real estate, life insurance policies and cryptocurrencies.

You’ll first need to establish an account at an investment firm like Fidelity to get started. Learn more by contacting your financial adviser.

A gift from your donor-advised fund will help fund critical ALS research, while supporting and caring for people living with ALS and their families.

Workplace Giving

Giving through your workplace with a payroll deduction is a simple and effective way to contribute a meaningful gift to ALS United Rhode Island on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis.

One way to participate in workplace giving is through Community Health Charities (CHC) programs. CHC connects American workplaces to credible charities focused on addressing our nation’s most pressing health issues and has represented the most well-respected health charities in our country for more than 50 years.

Please contact your HR department for more details on how to start your charitable giving through your workplace.

What if my company doesn’t participate?

You can be an agent of change! If your company doesn’t participate in a workplace giving program, encourage your company’s executives to get involved.

When companies participate in workplace giving through CHC, employees can select the health causes most important to them and know that their charitable dollars are spent wisely.

Life expectancy for people diagnosed with ALS averages just 2-5 years. And there’s currently no cure.

ALS United RI is the only local non-profit providing direct care and clinic services to patients with ALS in Rhode Island.

Planned Giving: Legacy Society

A planned gift is a contribution that is arranged in the present and allocated at a future date. Commonly donated through a will or trust, planned gifts are most often granted once the donor has passed away.

Who are the ALS Guardians?

ALS Guardians are a devoted group of individuals who have taken an extraordinary step to protect and uplift the future of those affected by ALS. By including ALS United Rhode Island in their will, estate plan, trust, annuities, IRA, or life insurance, these supporters ensure their impact lives on.

Becoming an ALS Guardian means standing watch over future generations—fueling groundbreaking research and sustaining the critical care services families depend on. Your legacy becomes a source of strength, hope, and progress in the fight against ALS.

How Do I Become an ALS Guardian?

Matching Gifts

If your company has an Employee Matching Gift Program, you can double the impact of your gift to ALS United Rhode Island!

Check with your Human Resources or Community Relations department, and ask for the proper form to request that your company match your gift.

Some companies also match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.

Individual Retirement Account (IRA) Giving

If you have an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), you can make a gift to a non-profit organization directly from your IRA. Plus, if you’ve reached the age of 70.5 when you need to take required minimum distributions, you can avoid paying taxes on them by donating that money to ALS United Rhode Island.

The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015 permanently extends the IRA Rollover Provision. This provision allows donors of age 70.5 or older to make tax-free distributions of up to $100,000 from individual retirement accounts each year and is excluded from your charitable income.

Note: Only the IRA custodian can transfer gift amounts. If IRA owners withdraw funds and contribute separately, amounts withdrawn will be taxable to the donor.
