Planned Giving: Legacy Society

By leaving a bequest to the chapter, we did our part in ensuring that the services that we were able to take advantage of remained a stable part of The ALS Association's mission."

Becoming a member of  Legacy Society was a no-brainer for me and my wife. I began seeing patients with ALS in the 1980s doing research on respiratory muscles and taking care of ALS patients became a large part of my professional life as a pulmonary/critical care physician over time. When we began developing plans for when we die, we decided that contributing to ALS was a priority. 

Once we decided that we wanted our chapter in our plan, it was pretty straight forward. And we learned that there are a number of ways to make it tax beneficial as well-an unexpected benefit."

I recently completed my estate planning and was eager to include the ALS Association Oregon and SW Washington Chapter as a beneficiary. This was extremely important to me. I have been an avid supporter of this organization for over a decade but there are always limitations regarding what I can give annually because of the day to day costs of living.   

By including the ALS Association in my legacy I can give a much more substantial sum that can have a greater impact. I have seen first hand the remarkable support that this organization  provides to people with ALS and their families, and the amazing contribution to research that will ultimately lead to a cure for this devastating disease."

When you care about something, you want to make a difference. Legacy giving is a way to do something significant with your estate and know that you have an impact on a mission that that is personally meaningful to you."

My husband and I are limited in what we can do financially for the ALS community as we raise our two kids, plan for their education, our own retirement all while doing what we can to embrace the moments right in front of us to make memories while we still can. My family participates, volunteers, donates, and advocates as often as possible, and feel extra comforted that part of our estate can continue the fight if it's still needed to get to the finish line."
